A video of a homeless encampment near the University of California, Berkeley has gained widespread attention. Lyanne Melendez, a reporter for ABC7 News, shared the video while helping her son move into University Village, a housing complex in Albany, California.
Melendez criticized the situation, tagging the City of Berkeley, the City of Albany, and the university administration in her post. The encampment is not directly on university property, but it affects students and families moving in.
A UC Berkeley spokesperson stated the site is not under university jurisdiction.
John Paul Leon, a student at UC Berkeley, commented on the encampment’s impact. He noted that while it doesn’t sit next to the main campus, students frequently encounter homeless individuals.
Leon expressed concern for the families who visit, suggesting it might be unsettling for some.
Nearby business owners, like Emily Winston of Boichik Bagels, share frustrations. She described the area as resembling conditions in underdeveloped regions. Winston detailed issues like litter, feces, and threatening encounters affecting business operations.
Winston reported a decline in sales, as families avoid the area. She regrets establishing her business there, urging municipal leaders to take decisive action.
Winston, along with other local businesses, have legally challenged the city over the encampment. Officials attribute delays to lawsuits which restrict efforts to clear the area.
Barry Braden, co-founder of Fieldwork Brewing Co., echoed these sentiments. The company has been discussing solutions with city leaders, pushing for action that aids those in need while maintaining community standards.
In response, City of Berkeley representatives cited ongoing legal and municipal strategies for improving public health and safety. Their filings indicate compliance with judicial instructions is a priority.
The issue continues to garner media attention and has prompted discussions on the complexities surrounding homelessness.
