ICE Vehicle Stops to Continue Amid Controversy

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the media in the Brady Briefing Room at the White House, Washington, DC. During the briefing, Leavitt confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will persist in conducting vehicle stops. This announcement followed reports suggesting these stops would be paused due to recent incidents.

Earlier reports claimed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) planned to halt the vehicle stop policy after two immigrants were fatally shot by ICE agents in July. However, President Trump contradicted these reports by asserting on Truth Social that such stops must continue. He described them as vital for crime prevention, emphasizing their effectiveness in fighting criminal activities.

Leavitt supported the president’s stance during the briefing, indicating that verbal guidance had been issued to field offices nationwide by DHS. She stressed the importance of vehicle stops for ICE agents in deporting high-risk illegal alien criminals, aligning the president’s and Homeland Security Secretary’s views on the necessity of these stops.

NPR sought clarification from DHS regarding this policy but was directed to the White House’s statements. The controversy arose following instances where immigrants were shot during ICE vehicle stops, with disputes over the circumstances of the shootings.

In Houston, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant, was shot by agents after allegedly using his van as a weapon. This claim was contested by passengers in his van. Similarly, in Maine, Joan Durán Guerrero, a Colombian national, was fatally shot by an ICE agent during a vehicle stop. DHS contended the car attempted to flee, posing a public safety threat, although no evidence was provided to substantiate this claim.

Additionally, a tragic incident occurred in St. Augustine, Florida, where a man was fatally hit by a tractor-trailer while fleeing an ICE stop. The Florida Highway Patrol has yet to share further details about the incident.
