Organizations that feed millions are facing new challenges. Inflation, increased demand, and now international conflicts exert pressure on their operations. The war in Iran contributes to this strain, requiring tough decisions from these groups.
Rising fuel costs are spreading through the U.S. economy, impacting food banks nationwide. These facilities are crucial for numerous pantries across the country seeking to provide aid.
Update as of May 20, 2026
Each morning, semi-trucks from Oregon Food Bank’s fleet set out from a central warehouse in Portland. These trucks carry canned goods, frozen meats, and fresh produce to food pantries throughout the state. Some destinations are nearby, like local churches and soup kitchens. The longest journeys stretch to the Idaho border, a trek of six hours over mountains and through shrublands.
Andrea Williams, the food bank’s president, noted that deliveries are now pricier. The conflict in Iran has sharply increased diesel costs, adding an estimated $20,000 per month to fuel expenses. This additional expenditure impacts the volume of food the organization can transport.
“It’s an opportunity cost,” Ms. Williams explained. “Funds could go to buying food, but instead they cover gas prices.”
While many Americans feel these war-induced fuel price surges, the consequences are more pronounced in less obvious sectors like food banks that support national pantry supplies.
An image shows Oregon Food Bank’s main distribution center in Portland, highlighting one of its longest routes by truck, lasting six hours. Annually, up to 50 million Americans seek emergency food help at local pantries and soup kitchens. Data from a 2024 Feeding America report confirms this reliance. Support from food banks, which procure and deliver essential supplies, is significant for rural communities.
