A woman wearing a burka was removed from a Florida county commissioners meeting after playing the Islamic call to prayer during the public comment period. This occurred amidst discussions about the proposed expansion of a local mosque.
Unusual Protest at Meeting
The incident took place as the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners heard from residents. A woman, dressed in black and only showing her left eye, played a recording instead of making a verbal comment. It was unclear if this was a protest or a prank.
Chairman Dave Eggers stopped the recording, citing rules that verbal comments are required. When the woman refused to stop the audio, a deputy escorted her out, prompting an outcry from the audience.
“Please. Just please exercise some decorum and kindness of your own,”Eggers urged the audience. He explained the board’s rule against playing recordings.
Mosque Expansion Controversy
The meeting followed an Oct. 13 vote where the board approved a land-use amendment for Masjid Al Rahman mosque’s expansion. The decision, passed by a narrow 4-3 vote, allowed changing the property from residential rural to public and semi-public. This change enabled the facility to increase in size by 1,000 feet.
Several residents spoke against the expansion, citing concerns about the treatment of women in Muslim-majority countries. One critic expressed that expanding the mosque supports an ideology opposed to American values. In contrast, a supporter described the mosque as a good neighbor with no previous issues.
Concerns Over Documentation
Commissioner Vince Nowicki questioned why the mosque wasn’t clearly described in government documents. He emphasized that all proposals should be described plainly for residents to understand what is being planned near them.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported that the woman was escorted out without further incident and will not face charges.
