President Donald Trump plans to support Republican Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas as polls show Democrat Adam Hamilton slightly ahead with three weeks left until Election Day. Marshall currently holds a seat that Republicans have maintained since 1919, making it the longest-held by any party. On Truth Social, Trump described Marshall as one of his favorite senators.
Midterms often test the political environment for the party in power, and historically, the president’s party tends to lose seats. Republicans hold a narrow majority in both the House and Senate. Trump won Kansas by a significant margin in the 2024 election, reflecting the state’s Republican favor. However, Democrats remain active, with Laura Kelly as governor despite both U.S. Senate seats being Republican.
Hamilton’s campaign spokesperson, Tyson Brody, criticized Marshall’s record, accusing him of supporting the war in Iran, cutting healthcare, and increasing prices on essentials. Brody also accused Marshall of harmful actions against low-income families and criticized his stance on the Epstein files.
Trump defended Marshall, calling him a wonderful person unfairly criticized for requesting payments owed by patients, which Trump claims would otherwise result in legal issues. The Cook Political Report recently moved the race from Lean Republican to Toss Up, indicating challenges for Republicans. Hamilton’s campaign ad highlighted negative billing practices associated with Marshall’s medical office.
Marshall labeled Hamilton as a radical Democrat, whose views align with the Democratic Party platform. Trump criticized Hamilton for favoring high taxes and open borders and questioned his suitability as a pastor, noting turmoil within his church. Hamilton’s congregation, the largest United Methodist Church in the U.S., allegedly experienced discord under his leadership. Trump also accused Hamilton of mishandling allegations of a child predator at a church camp, which Hamilton’s campaign denied.
Recent polls indicate a tight race. A YouGov poll gave Hamilton a slight edge at 48% compared to Marshall’s 45%, with a margin of error at 3.2%. A Trafalgar Group poll showed Hamilton at 44.4% while Marshall had 43.5%. Another poll showed Marshall leading with 47% against Hamilton’s 46%, with a higher margin of error of 4.6 points.
Marshall addressed a social media post regarding an unpaid 2020 invoice from a cookie vendor. He stated his campaign repaid the vendor double the amount once aware of the issue, including a screenshot of the paid invoice.
