Indiana Fever Triumphs Over Portland Fire with Stellar Performances

Caitlin Clark delivered an outstanding performance by achieving a triple-double with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked her fourth career triple-double. Her contribution led the Indiana Fever to a 112-98 victory against the Portland Fire on Friday night. Kelsey Mitchell also scored 26 points for the Fever. The team, currently at 19-10, has been on a strong winning streak, clinching nine wins out of their last 11 games. They have maintained a scoring streak, surpassing 100 points in five consecutive games.

Bridget Carleton was impressive for the Fire, scoring 26 points, although the team faced its fourth consecutive loss, bringing their record to 11-18. The Fever gained momentum in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 18 points, thus ending the quarter at 90-72. In the fourth quarter, Makayla Timpson made a critical layup that extended the Fever’s lead by 10 points. Despite this, the Fire reduced the deficit, with Carleton hitting a 3-pointer that brought them closer at 98-88 with just over four minutes remaining. Carleton added a layup pushing the score to 100-93, but ultimately, Clark’s free throws secured a 110-96 advantage, leaving the Fire with insufficient time for a comeback.

Before the game, there was a rally outside the Moda Center supporting Sophie Cunningham’s recent remarks against transgender athletes in women’s and girls’ sports. A similar rally occurred before the Fever’s victory over the Seattle Storm earlier in the week. Cunningham received boos from the crowd upon entering the game in the first quarter; she quickly responded with a 3-pointer, bringing the Fever up 14-8, and finished the game with 13 points.

Megan DiLeo’s 3-pointer had temporarily placed the Fire ahead 36-30, but the Fever regained a 56-47 lead at halftime. Clark had an impactful first half, leading the scores with 17 points. The match was sold out, with a record attendance of 19,959 fans for the Fire. Looking forward, the Fever will play at Minnesota on Sunday, while the Fire will host Los Angeles on the same day.
