Cities across the region could experience highs in the upper 90s and triple digits. The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center indicates that many places may set or tie daily high-temperature records.

NWS has issued widespread Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories across central, southern, and eastern parts of the United States. The forecast emphasizes potentially dangerous heat indexes and limited nighttime temperature relief. In particular, the Southeast and Gulf Coast states face a high risk of record-breaking temperatures due to the combination of heat and tropical humidity.

Heatwave Intensification

According to NWS’s latest forecast, an upper-high strengthening over the region is the driving factor. Expected highs range from the upper 90s to low 100s, with heat indices projected at 105-115 degrees. Several high maximum temperatures are anticipated to break, with some locations possibly experiencing their hottest days in years.

Record High Minimum Temperatures Expected

Many areas are likely to experience record high minimum temperatures, indicating unusually warm overnight lows. These conditions are particularly concerning as they provide minimal relief from daytime heat.

Friday Temperature Records at Risk

Potential record-breaking temperatures are forecast for several Southeast locations. In Fayetteville, North Carolina, temperatures may reach 101 degrees, eclipsing a 1918 record. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is forecast at 94 degrees, potentially topping a 1997 record. Many other cities in North Carolina and Florida are also at risk. Minor weather changes could influence whether records are tied or broken.

Saturday Temperature Projections

On Saturday, heat may spread further, affecting the Southern Plains to the Southeast. Charleston, South Carolina, could hit 98 degrees, threatening its 2023 record, while Savannah, Georgia, might tie a 1918 record. Texas and Mississippi locations are similarly at risk of breaking recent records.

Persistent Heat on Sunday

Sunday’s forecast suggests dangerous heat will persist, with potential record-tying conditions in Louisiana and Mississippi. Baton Rouge and New Orleans might meet their existing daily highs, while other locations like Greenville, Mississippi, approach decades-old records.

Health officials advise minimizing outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Staying in air-conditioned environments and remaining hydrated is crucial. Lightweight, light-colored clothing is recommended to help keep cool. Residents should check on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children.
