International Extradition Efforts Increase Under FBI Director Kash Patel

Arizona murder suspect Varun Batchigari was recently arrested in Germany. He faces extradition to the U.S. for allegedly killing his girlfriend Julissa Salazar. Former DOJ prosecutor Jim Trusty discusses the legal challenges involved in Batchigari’s extradition.

FBI Director Kash Patel has expanded cooperation with international partners to bring fugitives back to the U.S. FBI data shows Patel’s proactive approach has increased extraditions and foreign transfers of custody (FTOC). Compared to the last 18 months of the Biden administration, extraditions rose by 65%, and FTOCs increased by 54%. During this period, the FBI executed 157 extraditions and 86 FTOCs.

“When I became FBI director, I made clear that we would relentlessly manhunt high‑value targets from overseas, and we’ve delivered,” said FBI Director Kash Patel.

Patel attributes the success to improved relationships with foreign governments during President Trump’s administration. Attorney General Todd Blanche’s leadership has also provided essential legal tools for these extraditions.

One notable case is Alexis Flores, extradited from Honduras after 25 years on the run. Flores was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list for the murder of a young girl in Philadelphia. The previous Honduran government had refused extradition, but recent changes allowed the FBI to bring him back.

In another instance, Zobaidul Amin was extradited from Malaysia to U.S. custody. Amin is accused of a large-scale online child exploitation scheme, coercing minors into producing explicit content.

Texas resident Abdullah Anwar was extradited from Qatar to face fraud charges. Anwar had fled to Pakistan but was arrested in Qatar before being sent back to the U.S.

Since June, the FBI has completed over 70 extraditions. Patel’s tenure has seen increased calls to foreign partners, significantly surpassing the activity under former FBI Director Christopher Wray.

The FBI works closely with foreign authorities using international treaties to obtain custody of suspects. Once a foreign government agrees to extradition, FBI agents collect the fugitive and return them to the U.S. for prosecution.
