Nolan Wells was an 18-year-old wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He vanished during a Fourth of July outing on Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Friends reported that Wells elected to remain behind to catch a ride with another group, even though his phone and keys were later found on the boat he arrived in. His body was discovered on July 6, near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
Anonymous Threats and Response
Christine Wonsley, Wells’ mother, shared an image of a hate-filled letter received at her home. Postmarked in Denver, dated July 15, it included a defaced Associated Press photograph from a news conference at the National Action Network headquarters on July 10, New York. Arrows and dollar signs were drawn next to Reverend Al Sharpton and attorney Ben Crump, with Wonsley at the image’s center. Wonsley condemned the sender’s cowardice in not revealing their identity, while expressing anger at receiving such hostility amid grief.
Funeral Arrangements
A funeral service for Wells will occur at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Visitation is set from 9-11 a.m., following which Sharpton and Crump will speak. The service aims to celebrate Wells’ life and honor his memory. As of Sunday, a GoFundMe campaign raised over $735,000, boosted by BuzzFeed CEO Byron Allen’s $100,000 donation.
Legal and Investigative Actions
The FBI’s Jackson Field Office assists the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office regarding aspects of the investigation and separately examines interstate threats linked to the case. Initially, investigators did not suspect foul play in Wells’ demise, but the pending autopsy results, including toxicology reports, remain crucial.
Wells’ family and Crump question the narrative that Wells chose to stay on the island, citing inconsistencies in witness statements. Crump’s legal team procured a video showing confrontation shortly before Wells disappeared. At a news conference in New York, Crump disclosed Wells demanding, “Give me my freaking phone. What are you freaking doing?” The footage prompts doubts concerning the truthfulness of friends’ accounts and Wells’ decision-making.
Contrary to Crump’s assertion, Tracestin Shepherd, who was present on Horn Island, claimed the video captured his own separate altercation. Shepherd reported Wells was not seen in this recording.
Racial Dynamics and Advocacy
Crump remarked on the racial dynamics involved, highlighting that Wells was one of the few Black individuals amid approximately 200 people celebrating on Horn Island on the holiday. At a Pascagoula press conference, Crump underscored the necessity of questioning investigative roles based on lived experiences of Black Americans.
During the July 10 National Action Network news conference, Crump announced Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp’s funding for an independent autopsy and thanked Tyler Perry for covering funeral expenses.

A Jackson County District Attorney confirmed that the completed death investigation’s findings will be presented to a grand jury for review. The grand jury, comprising citizens, will examine the evidence to determine the viability of criminal charges and an indictment.
