Iranian Soccer Team Relocates World Cup Training Base to Mexico

1 month ago 0

The Iranian Soccer Federation announced the relocation of the national team’s World Cup training base from the United States to Mexico. Mehdi Taj, president of the Federation, released the statement through the organization’s media relations. The move awaits confirmation by FIFA.

Originally scheduled to train in Tucson, Arizona, the team will now be based in Tijuana, Mexico. The decision comes amid concerns over security related to the war in the Middle East. Officials at Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex did not provide comments.

The relocation aims to address visa issues, allowing the team to enter the U.S. through Mexico, with potential travel via Iran Air. The World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, runs from June 11 to July 19.

Iran, part of Group G, will play New Zealand in Inglewood, California, on June 15, Belgium on June 21, and Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The team will benefit from Tijuana’s proximity to Inglewood, as the new base includes comprehensive facilities like training grounds, a gym, and a private restaurant.

President Taj confirmed the move during meetings with FIFA and World Cup officials in Istanbul, and a subsequent webinar with FIFA’s secretary general. Team Melli is participating in its fourth consecutive World Cup and seventh overall, aiming to advance beyond the first round for the first time.
