Irish Singer-Songwriter Glen Hansard Dies in Motorcycle Accident

Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, known for his work in the film “Once,” died in a motorcycle accident near Dublin. He was 56 years old according to his management, ATC Management. Hansard’s family expressed their deep shock and heartbreak over his sudden passing.

The unfortunate news prompted a wave of tributes. Bruce Springsteen, among others, expressed his sorrow on Instagram, describing Hansard as a talented musician, a good friend, and a man of great generosity and grace.

Police in Ireland reported a man in his 50s died at the scene of a single-vehicle motorcycle accident in Lucan, near Dublin, around 4:30 a.m. local time. Police did not disclose his identity immediately, but he was pronounced dead shortly after receiving treatment on the scene.

Glen Hansard balanced acting and music throughout his career. He played in the 1991 film “The Commitments” and won an Oscar in 2008 for “Falling Slowly,” a song from the indie musical “Once,” which he co-wrote with Markéta Irglová. The story of “Once” centers on two struggling musicians and later became a Broadway hit, winning eight Tony Awards in 2012, including best musical.

Hansard was the long-time lead for the rock band The Frames, part of the duo The Swell Season with Irglová, and released solo albums such as “Didn’t He Ramble,” which was Grammy-nominated for Best Folk Album in 2016.

President Catherine Connolly of Ireland reflected on Hansard’s influence, calling him a vital part of Ireland’s music scene for uniting people through live performances. Actor-comedian Chris O’Dowd noted Hansard’s melodies and soulful voice enriched both tough and joyous times.

Hansard began as a busker on Dublin’s streets and became well-known for leading the Christmas Eve busk outside Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre, supporting a homelessness charity. Former President Michael D. Higgins noted Hansard’s commitment to societal issues aside from his music career.

In 2023, following the passing of The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan, Hansard and singer Lisa O’Neill performed “Fairytale Of New York” during the funeral service, impressing attendees with their rendition.

Glen Hansard is survived by his wife, Finnish poet Maire Saaritsa, and their 3-year-old son, Christy.
