NBA playoff games often slow down, creating intense moments where each possession becomes crucial. In the first game of the NBA Finals, the New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson excelled during these moments, leading to a 105-95 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. His 13 points in the fourth quarter were key to securing a 1-0 series lead.
The Spurs, scoring only 19 points in the final quarter, appeared disorganized as they struggled offensively. Brunson’s ability to deliver under pressure has positioned him as a top playoff performer. Since the 2023 postseason began, he has led in both attempted and made clutch field goals, defined as taking place within five points and under five minutes remaining. With only 14.8% of his clutch points being assisted, Brunson frequently creates his own shots.
In the biggest moments, he shows up, and that’s what MVPs are supposed to do.
Head coach Mike Brown expressed confidence in Brunson, consistently relying on him to deliver during crucial times.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged Brunson’s skills, noting his ability to stay composed and take precise shots. Despite physical setbacks during the game, such as knee and ankle issues, Brunson pushed through to score 30 points, emphasizing confidence and teamwork as pivotal factors.
While Brunson showcased his expertise, the Spurs faced difficulties. They managed only 40 points in the second half, with Victor Wembanyama providing a brief scoring burst but ultimately struggling, shooting 3-for-8 and making costly turnovers. His teammates provided little support, collectively shooting 28.6% in the fourth quarter.
De’Aaron Fox, the team’s experienced guard, missed both his shots and committed two turnovers in the final period.
Despite the narrow lens of a single game, Game 1 highlighted San Antonio’s struggles in clutch moments, reflected in their 96.8 offensive rating. In contrast, the Knicks have thrived under pressure this postseason, with a 107.7 offensive rating and an 18.5 net rating in tight games. Brunson’s performance in Game 1 illustrates the Knicks’ ability to capitalize when the stakes are high.
[Brunson] was the MVP in the second half…. He did what MVP candidates are supposed to do. He carried us home.
Mike Brown lauded Brunson’s pivotal role in maintaining their lead, attributing the team’s success to his outstanding play.
