James Talarico Discusses Key Issues in Texas Senate Race

In a recent interview, Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico expressed his support for banning gender surgeries for minors and his opposition to transgender-identifying men participating in women’s sports. This stance aligns with his efforts to modify a Texas bill by limiting surgeries for minors, although his amendment attempt was unsuccessful.

The Texas Senate race is tightly contested, with Talarico challenging Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. The outcome could significantly influence President Donald Trump’s policies. Talarico addressed these issues during a campaign event in Dallas, while a GOP midterm convention occurred nearby.

When asked about a national ban on gender surgery for minors, Talarico confirmed his support. He explained his history of opposing overly broad measures and his vote for amendments on the issue. He noted that he had consistently pushed for a focus on the intended goals of legislation.

Talarico acknowledged safety and fairness concerns in sports, particularly regarding trans athletes in girls’ sports. His background as a teacher influences his commitment to ensuring sports are both safe and equitable for student athletes.

The candidate also reassessed previous controversial statements, such as describing God as “non-binary” and claiming six genders. He clarified that he intended to challenge human categorization of God, not to assert a theological doctrine. Talarico expressed regret for any misconceptions his statements caused.

Specifically, Talarico corrected his remarks about genders, clarifying that while there are two sexes, there are cases involving genetic differences. He accused political opponents of focusing on such topics to divert attention from economic issues like rising diesel costs.

Despite a previous vote against permanently banning state income tax, Talarico maintained opposition to such a tax, citing the previous measure as redundant and wasteful. The issue passed both the Legislature and voters in 2019.
