Jared Kushner’s Diplomatic Efforts Amid Tensions in Gaza and Israel

44 minutes ago 0

On August 17, 2026, U.S. envoy Jared Kushner engaged in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following discussions with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Cairo. The objective was to advance a peace plan for Gaza, an effort met with opposition from Israel. A Hamas official confirmed the meeting’s details to NBC News. The discussions aimed to progress the ceasefire established in October.

The specifics of Kushner’s dialogue with Netanyahu remain undisclosed. A rare public disagreement has emerged between the U.S. and Israel concerning the future of the Palestinian territory and Israel’s response to crises in the West Bank.

Pressure is mounting on Netanyahu, who faces electoral challenges in October, especially from his coalition’s far-right members. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir criticized peace attempts, advocating for nightly targeted killings in Gaza.

Netanyahu recently dismissed a 15-point proposal necessitating Hamas’ disarmament and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza. He emphasized that withdrawal hinges on Hamas’ genuine disarmament. Conversely, Hamas welcomed regional condemnation of Israel’s rejection of the plan.

Kushner was expected to be accompanied by Nickolay Mladenov and Tony Blair. A Board of Peace representative stated both nations agree on demilitarizing Hamas and are finding ways to expedite progress.

Despite the U.S.-Israel accord on the final goals, many in Israel oppose the Trump-backed initiative. Criticism continues, with Ben-Gvir aggressively opposing the ceasefire. His stance promotes increased military actions in Gaza, a region already experiencing regular Israeli attacks.

Since the ceasefire’s inception, over 1,200 individuals in Gaza have died, as reported by the health ministry. Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in the loss of at least four soldiers.

Ben-Gvir’s statements paralleled comments from other Israeli officials, which have been mentioned in an International Court of Justice case alleging genocide by Israel in Gaza. Both the U.S. and Israel refute this accusation. Ben-Gvir suggests the mass relocation of Palestinians from Gaza, claiming ownership of the region.

In other developments, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed drafting plans to transfer security responsibilities in the West Bank to the Israel Police, an entity under Ben-Gvir’s purview. Israeli settlers continue their violent campaign against the Palestinian village of Qusra. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee condemned these acts, labeling the settlers as “Israeli terrorists.”

Since the October 7 attacks in 2023, settler violence has escalated. Over 73,000 people, including many children, have died in Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry, with significant destruction across the region.
