Nebraska Woman Accused of Gas Station Theft Through Rewards Card Glitch

1 month ago 0

In Lincoln, Nebraska, a woman is facing felony theft charges after allegedly exploiting a gas station pump glitch. By double-swiping a rewards card, she reportedly pumped free gas, causing nearly $28,000 in losses for the station.

Authorities state the woman took advantage of this flaw over several months. The issue was discovered in October when Bosselman Enterprises noticed discrepancies at their Pump & Pantry location. Software updates performed on the fuel pumps in November 2022 inadvertently allowed double-swiping to trigger a demonstration mode, which dispensed gas without charge.

Investigations revealed that one specific card was used repeatedly for free transactions. Video evidence showed the suspect obtaining fuel for months before the glitch was corrected on June 1. Additionally, the woman allegedly let another individual use the card for a fee, with reports indicating $500 was paid for discounted fuel.

The card was used 510 times, amounting to 7,400 gallons of free gas, according to the probable cause statement. As legal proceedings continue, the accused remains free on bond, with a court date scheduled for April 11.
