Controversy Over DOGE and Trump’s Administration

2 weeks ago 0

A protestor in Los Angeles holds a sign at a rally on February 17, 2025, objecting to policies from President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The demonstration highlights concerns over the Trump administration’s approach to disrupting American political norms.

The administration’s strategy often revolves around overwhelming the news cycle and shifting focus from one controversial action to another. This method complicates efforts to hold the government accountable.

Part of this approach includes the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which played a significant role during the initial 100 days of Trump’s second term. DOGE aggressively targeted federal agencies, leading to substantial cuts. One expert characterized these cuts as extensive, indiscriminate, and often outside legal boundaries.

For instance, DOGE’s actions severely impacted the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Nearly all grants active during the Biden administration were revoked. Moreover, two-thirds of NEH staff were dismissed. Judge Colleen McMahon of the Federal District Court in Manhattan issued a ruling condemning DOGE’s mishandling of NEH’s affairs, which disrupted the lives and projects of those dependent on NEH funds.

Trump’s administration redirected federal funds to support projects he deemed patriotic, disregarding those critical of the country or that focused on diversity. McMahon stated that this form of viewpoint discrimination breaches the First Amendment. She pointed out DOGE’s intention to sever grants linked to ideologies it disliked and noted the wrongful termination of grants tied to the Biden administration.

McMahon also criticized the inexperience of two young DOGE staffers involved with the NEH. Prior to their roles, neither had expertise in government, public or private grant administration, nor in evaluating projects for academic merit. Their reliance on technologies like ChatGPT to filter grants based on diversity, equity, and inclusion was highlighted.

Despite statutory guidelines granting grant decision authority to the agency’s chair, these DOGE representatives exerted pressure to rush decisions and accommodate the new administration, blatantly bypassing legal protocols. McMahon’s decision serves as a legal reminder that using presidential power to disregard laws is unacceptable.

Maintaining awareness of DOGE’s actions and McMahon’s findings is crucial. This oversight is vital to counteract the administration’s efforts to obscure its challenges to established rules and traditions.
