Jennifer Balkcom Appointed GOP Nominee for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District

North Carolina state Representative Jennifer Balkcom has been chosen as the GOP nominee for the state’s 11th Congressional District following Representative Chuck Edwards’ decision to not seek re-election. The North Carolina Republican Party’s 11th Congressional District Executive Committee selected Balkcom on Monday.

Endorsements from Prominent Figures

The candidacy received backing from U.S. Senator Ted Budd, R-N.C., and U.S. Representative Greg Murphy, R-N.C.

“I’m blessed to receive the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District,” Balkcom said, expressing gratitude for the nomination in a statement shared by reporters on social media. She criticized the Democratic Party for abandoning traditional values in favor of extremism.

Balkcom emphasized the importance of addressing this extremism, highlighting issues like tax increases and immigration policies she attributes to her Democratic opponents. She stated that keeping this agenda from advancing in government begins in the Eleventh District.

Upcoming Election Challenge

In the general election, Balkcom will compete against Democratic candidate Jamie Ager.

Zach Almond, the executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, expressed satisfaction with Balkcom’s selection, noting her alignment with Western North Carolina values. Almond underscored Balkcom’s background in agriculture, banking, and finance as beneficial to constituents.

Resignation Announcement by Edwards

Chuck Edwards, who won the Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District earlier this year, recently announced his withdrawal from the re-election race. Edwards plans to complete his current term, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve Western North Carolina.

His decision came after a House Committee on Ethics report recommended his censure for persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct with young female staffers.

The report detailed Edwards’ behavior, including gifts and comments about the staffers’ appearances, which could be interpreted as romantic advances. Although Edwards denied any such intentions, the committee findings pointed towards a pattern of behavior that warranted further scrutiny.
