Jerry Jones Discusses Tony Romo’s OWI Arrest

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed confidence that his former franchise quarterback, Tony Romo, will manage the recent incident involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Wisconsin. Jones, who observed Romo’s performance under center for 13 seasons, spoke to KDFW Fox 4 about his regular contact with Romo, now a broadcaster.

Romo was apprehended on July 23, facing charges not only for operating a vehicle under the influence but also for possession of an open alcohol container and passing unsafely to the right.

Jones remarked, “I love him. I love his character and his passion for sports. Romo’s ability to rise after setbacks defines his strength. He can handle adversity exceptionally well.” He further emphasized Romo’s unique talent and resilience.

This arrest has gained attention as NFL training camps commenced last week, especially following the release of police bodycam footage.

During the arrest, Romo, after participating in the Wisconsin Amateur Golf Championship, allegedly denied consuming alcohol and questioned the officer’s assumption of his intoxication.

Romo was taken into custody after an officer noted red, glassy eyes and detected alcohol odor on his breath. Post-arrest, Romo declined a breath test, citing advice from legal experts.

Amidst the unfolding events, CBS Sports announced Romo’s leave, replacing him with former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Romo became the lead NFL analyst for CBS on April 4, 2017, following his retirement. During his NFL career, he amassed 34,183 yards, 248 touchdowns, and 117 interceptions, achieving a completion rate of 65.3%.
