Jerry Rice, the esteemed NFL Hall of Famer, confronted a heckler during the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday. The San Francisco 49ers icon was participating in the event alongside notable sports figures and celebrities like Aaron Rodgers, Charles Barkley, and Tony Romo.
Rice, now 63, was in the midst of his round, eventually completing the event in 42nd place within a competitive field of 90 players. During one of his tee shots, a person in the gallery mockingly shouted, “Fore!” This prompted Rice to respond vocally, “Hey! Yo! Hey! Hey!”
Rice then took swift action, ducking under the ropes with his club in hand to approach the crowd, persistently questioning, “Which one? Which one?!” Despite wearing golf spikes, Rice showcased the quick speed that once made him a legendary wide receiver in the NFL.
A nearby spectator pointed out the alleged heckler, identifying them with, “Green and blue,” allowing Rice to approach them directly and swiftly.
The confrontation simmered down after Rice’s interaction, leading him to return to the tee box accompanied by applause from the audience. Rice’s competitive spirit was on full display during this encounter. He had previously engaged in a heated moment at the same venue during the last year’s championship, snapping at reporters who he felt questioned his allegiance to the 49ers vis-à-vis the Kansas City Chiefs.
One onlooker on Thursday described the scene aptly, warning, “Don’t poke the bear!” capturing the essence of Rice’s fervent nature.
The championship featured many notable interactions, including moments of camaraderie such as the shared laugh between Annika Sorenstam and Jerry Rice during the event’s first round.
