Judge Warns Trump Over BBC Lawsuit Participation

1 hour ago 0

A federal judge has cautioned former President Donald Trump about potential sanctions related to his non-participation in a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué A. Lett addressed Trump’s lack of involvement in his $10 billion lawsuit accusing the BBC of defamation and deception.

Lett noted that despite her warnings, the BBC had to file five requests independently due to Trump’s disregard for court procedures. The current dispute involves the BBC’s demand for Trump to testify under oath. Trump’s team initially scheduled a date in October but canceled, citing national matters. This prompted the BBC to seek court intervention to compel Trump to attend.

Judge Lett emphasized the need for compliance with court orders to avoid sanctions. A discovery hearing is set to evaluate the BBC’s request to compel Trump, and Trump must respond to the BBC’s arguments.

Trump’s Legal Team Responds

Trump’s legal team has not directly addressed Judge Lett’s directives. However, a spokesperson criticized the BBC for allegedly manipulating Trump’s speech in an attempt to influence the 2024 Presidential Election. The spokesperson labeled the BBC’s actions as politically motivated and defended Trump’s lawsuit as holding the broadcaster accountable.

Newsweek reached out to Trump’s attorney Alejandro Brito for comments regarding the ongoing legal proceedings.

Trump’s Lawsuit Against the BBC

Trump launched a lawsuit in Florida last December against the BBC. He accused them of misrepresenting him in a documentary, claiming it aimed to influence the upcoming presidential election. The lawsuit focuses on the BBC’s Panorama documentary, “Trump: A Second Chance?” The program allegedly combined separate parts of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech to appear as one continuous statement, suggesting he incited the Capitol riot. Trump seeks $5 billion for each defamation and unfair trade practices.

The BBC apologized for the edit, admitting it gave a misleading impression but denied defaming Trump, seeking the case’s dismissal.

BBC Seeks Court-Ordered Deposition from Trump

In October, the BBC requested the court to mandate Trump’s deposition. The broadcaster accused Trump of delaying tactics. Lawyers indicated attempts to schedule a deposition since July, with repeated follow-ups. An October date was agreed upon, later canceled by Trump’s team.

Attempts to reschedule have been unsuccessful, with Trump’s legal counsel stating he would be unavailable until January, beyond the discovery deadline. The BBC emphasized Trump’s litigation obligations in pursuing this lawsuit.

Background on the BBC Documentary

The controversy arose after a leaked memo from former BBC adviser Michael Prescott criticized the documentary for lacking balance and impartiality. Prescott highlighted concerns about the film’s editing decisions, suggesting it presented Trump in a negative light without fair representation.

BBC Director General Tim Davie and News CEO Deborah Turness resigned following the memo’s fallout. BBC chair Samir Shah apologized for the misleading edit, asserting corrective measures were taken, including editorial guideline updates and disciplinary actions.
