Justin Verlander to Retire After 2026 Season

One of baseball’s legendary pitchers, Justin Verlander, announced the end of his career following the 2026 season. The three-time Cy Young Award winner made this decision amidst a challenging, injury-laden season with the Detroit Tigers.

“This season has challenged me in ways I haven’t experienced before, both physically and mentally,” Verlander shared in a social media post. He expressed that he always wanted the game to dictate when it was time to retire. “Over the last several months, I’ve realized that time has come.” Despite the decision, Verlander remains committed to finishing the season strong, especially with the Tigers, the team that first drafted him.

Verlander signed a one-year contract with Detroit this offseason, returning to the team where he played for over a decade before moving to the Houston Astros. With the Astros, he achieved dominance, winning two World Series titles and two Cy Young Awards.

Baseball has given me more than I could have imagined. It taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of continuing to adapt and evolve, Verlander stated, reflecting on his career.

His remarkable journey included numerous accolades. Verlander won his first Cy Young Award in 2011 and added another in 2019. Notably, his dominant 2022 season with a 1.75 ERA highlighted his exceptional talent. Verlander missed the entire 2021 season due to Tommy John surgery, recovering impressively to achieve career milestones.

Verlander currently leads active pitchers with 3,554 strikeouts, ranking eighth in MLB history. His elite performance earned him a spot in the Midsummer Classic as a 10-time All-Star, thanks to a legend’s exemption.

Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Verlander’s contribution to baseball, suggesting his potential unanimous induction into the Hall of Fame alongside Mariano Rivera. As the season progresses, Verlander aims to surpass legends like Don Sutton and Tom Seaver in strikeouts.
