On September 9, 2024, Kacey Musgraves performed at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, as part of her “Deeper Well” tour. During a concert in Texas, Musgraves expressed strong opinions about Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, coinciding with the upcoming Columbus Day.
Addressing her audience at American Airlines Center, Musgraves questioned the significance of the day, stating, “Tomorrow’s Monday? Ew, that’s right, wait, it’s Columbus Day?” When the crowd responded, emphasizing Indigenous People’s Day instead, Musgraves took a bold stance, dismissing Columbus as “literally the lamest person to probably ever exist” and labeling him a “loser.” Her comments also included the exclamation, “We hate you!”
While Columbus is known for his voyages that opened the Americas to European exploration, he has faced criticisms from activists and scholars regarding his treatment of Indigenous populations and the beginnings of colonization. This debate has persisted in recent years, raising national discourse on his legacy.
Musgraves has been involved in political activism, urging her fans to support organizations such as the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. She emphasized, “It’s a wonderful organization, and they help give aid — legal aid — and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly.” Musgraves clarified her intentions, stating, “It’s not a political thing. It’s just, these kids need help.”
On another occasion, Musgraves hosted Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico at a concert in Dallas. Her involvement highlighted her political engagements as she also criticized former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Amidst controversies surrounding Columbus, some figures have defended him. Theo Wold, former deputy assistant for domestic policy under President Trump, criticized Musgraves’ comments. He remarked, “Obviously, no one expects a corporate-backed recording star to know a damn thing about world history, but unfortunately, the abysmal educational standards of our public schools have made Musgrave’s misinformed views widespread among regular Americans.” Wold emphasized Columbus’ contributions as an adventurer and navigator, stating the prosperity associated with his explorations.
Public discourse on Columbus continues to be divisive, reflecting varying perspectives on historical significance and modern cultural implications.
