New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns began the NBA Finals with a wave of praise. However, following the Game 3 defeat against the San Antonio Spurs, that admiration has faded. This was the Knicks’ first loss in 46 days.
Criticism of Towns focuses on his performance in the crucial moments, particularly the fourth quarter. According to X account @NBAcrazystats, Towns has not scored in the fourth quarter of the first three NBA Finals games. Throughout these games, he scored 50 points in the first three quarters combined but did not contribute any points in the final quarter.
Towns has played more fourth-quarter minutes than any of his teammates, totaling 29.1 minutes, compared to guard Jalen Brunson’s 26.9 minutes. During this time, Brunson scored 32 points while Towns failed to score any.
“There were times that offense did struggle because he didn’t want the ball,” said ESPN’s Alan Hahn on Get Up.
Initially, Towns was praised for his defensive efforts against Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. But Game 3 saw Wembanyama dominate with 32 points compared to Towns’ mere 11 points. This shift prompted criticism from those who had previously praised Towns.
As the Knicks prepare for Game 4 on Wednesday, the onus is on their 30-year-old center to enhance his production. Without improvement, New York risks losing their 2-0 series lead in what could be one of the more disappointing Finals losses in recent memory.
