Kevin Durant Chooses to Focus on WNBA Success Amid Gender Debate

During Houston Rockets Media Day, basketball star Kevin Durant avoided getting involved in the ongoing debate over gender eligibility in women’s sports. Reporters questioned him about the campaign led by his former Thunder teammate, Enes Kanter Freedom, and NBA first-round pick Royce White, aimed at preventing biological men from joining women’s leagues.

Instead of addressing the topic, Durant shifted focus. He highlighted the recent achievements of the WNBA, such as sneaker deals and increased revenue. “All that stuff used to be noise, man. WNBA is flourishing,” Durant stated. “Look at the money they’ve made over the last few years. Look at visibility of their league. They got four or five signature athletes on major brands that represent major brands. These women have brands for themselves, the business women for themselves outside the game.”

He expressed appreciation for the league’s progress, emphasizing his interest in advancing the sport. “I understand the message in behind what they’re trying to do, but a person like me who just strictly cares for the purity of the sport, I do not give a f*** about none of that. I care about flourishing and pushing the league forward and that’s what’s happening right now,” he added.

Kanter Freedom and White have been vocal critics of the WNBA’s gender eligibility policy. They announced plans to “identify as women” and declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft, pointing to loopholes in gender identity requirements. Critics and current WNBA players dismissed this move as a stunt. Kanter Freedom stated his goal is to safeguard female athletes, while White criticized the current collective bargaining agreement for its vague language on gender identity.

The debate turned contentious in Chicago when Kanter Freedom attended a Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game. He had an altercation with Natasha Cloud, resulting in his ejection and being banned from the venue. Cameron Brink and other players supported the ban. Despite these controversies, Durant remains focused on sports achievements.
