Key Congressional Primary Tests Trump’s Influence in Tennessee

1 hour ago 0

Voters in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District face a pivotal decision as a primary race unfolds. This contest will test former President Donald Trump’s influence as voters decide between Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., who has Trump’s backing, and Charlie Hatcher, endorsed last minute by Governor Bill Lee.

Ogles, a staunch Trump ally seeking a third term, represents parts of Middle Tennessee, including the Nashville suburbs. Hatcher, formerly Tennessee’s Agriculture Commissioner, received Lee’s endorsement, much to Ogles’ lack of surprise. Ogles said, “I’m not really surprised at all. You know, they’re friends.”

“The golden endorsement that anyone wants is that of President Trump’s, which I have,” Ogles stated, emphasizing his endorsements from key conservative figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan.

The importance of Trump’s endorsement is heightened in Tennessee, a state Trump won decisively in previous elections. Despite Trump’s support and incumbency, Ogles faces a tight race. A super PAC, Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, has spent over $1 million against him, with top donor billionaire Chris Larsen, who previously supported Kamala Harris.

Ogles, part of the House Freedom Caucus, has often been a key negotiator for Republican legislation, gaining loyalty from leaders like Johnson. Johnson at a recent tele-rally described Ogles as essential to maintaining the Republican majority and praised his efforts on key bills like the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.” He stated, “Andy Ogles is a key part of this majority.”

On the other side, Hatcher has highlighted his long friendship with Lee, asserting that he embodies conservative values while supporting President Trump’s agenda. In his endorsement, Lee shared, “In Congress, I will work hard, serve people, and get the job done by pursuing sensible, problem-solving solutions.” Hatcher promises to work on lowering living costs for Tennesseans.

Lee and Trump have previously clashed in endorsements. In a past race, Trump supported Bobby Harshbarger over a Lee-backed candidate. Harshbarger won, prompting Trump to criticize Lee on social media.

Fox News Digital sought a response from Hatcher’s campaign but has not yet received any comments.
