Knicks Edge Spurs in NBA Finals Thriller, Move Closer to Championship

2 weeks ago 0

The New York Knicks are two wins away from breaking their lengthy championship drought as they head back to Madison Square Garden. Jalen Brunson’s crucial free throw in the final seconds secured a 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. Earlier, Victor Wembanyama’s missed jumper provided the Knicks an opportunity to clinch the win.

Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns contributed significantly with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Brunson and Mikal Bridges each added 20 points, while the Knicks achieved their 13th consecutive win, setting the record as the second-longest streak in NBA playoff history.

The Knicks are now among the rare teams to win the initial two games of the finals while on the road, alongside Michael Jordan’s 1993 Chicago Bulls and Hakeem Olajuwon’s 1995 Houston Rockets. Both previous teams captured championships, with the Bulls taking six games and the Rockets sweeping the Orlando Magic.

Victor Wembanyama, despite a reserved start, led San Antonio with 29 points. De’Aaron Fox also delivered 20 points for the Spurs. Game 3 of the series takes place at Madison Square Garden this Monday night.

In a notable comeback, the Spurs overturned a 12-point shortfall midway through the fourth quarter. Wembanyama’s three-point play with 57 seconds remaining gave San Antonio a brief lead at 104-102. Brunson quickly retaliated, tying the game again. Wembanyama’s next shot failed, and an important rebound by OG Anunoby granted the Knicks a chance to set a decisive play.

The Knicks retained the lead after Brunson was fouled on the Spurs’ following possession. He scored the final points before the game concluded. Game 3 is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. this Monday in New York City.
