LSU head coach Lane Kiffin decided to leave his position at Ole Miss to join LSU in pursuit of building a championship dynasty in Baton Rouge. Kiffin led the Rebels to the College Football Playoff last season, but he departed before the tournament commenced.
Reports suggest that Kiffin received comparable offers from Florida and Ole Miss. However, he viewed LSU as having the most potential for securing multiple national titles. The Tigers have significant resources to support competitive teams.
LSU provides the necessary backing for a championship pursuit.
In a conversation with reporters on Monday, Kiffin highlighted money as a significant motivator for current players. Unlike in the past, athletes now understand that their performance can influence the financial rewards they receive.
Kiffin stated, “We’ve evolved in that, in how we talk. They make a lot of money, a lot of them now. So, to me, there’s a little bit of a difference in there. If you get what part of your motivation was, are you still motivated? We work through that in the way that we talk to them, the things that we point to.”
He acknowledged the complexities of players earning money but also saw positives, noting, “There’s also a good side, too, because I think they feel more like it’s a big job vs. ‘Oh, I just have a scholarship. I kind of show up and do football part-time.’”
Kiffin observed that some players recognize the importance of performance in maintaining their positions at LSU. “I think they do take it more seriously that way and realize, ‘Hey, if I don’t play well, I’m probably not going to make that next year. And if I play well, I’m going to make more vs. I just have the same scholarship,’” he said.
Kiffin’s insights reflect a changing landscape in college football, where financial incentives influence player motivation and commitment to the sport.
