Human remains were discovered approximately 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s residence near Tucson, Arizona. This event triggered speculation regarding potential connections to Guthrie’s disappearance over six months ago. Despite public conjecture, authorities stated there is currently no evidence linking the remains to the Guthrie investigation.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department clarified that time-of-death markers suggest the remains predate Guthrie’s disappearance. On social media, their statement revealed the remains were discovered near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard in the desert. The remains had evidently been there for an extended duration.
Although the Guthrie case heightened interest in this discovery, such incidents are relatively frequent in southern Arizona. The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner conducts about 4,500 death investigations annually. The county reportedly possesses the largest collection of skeletal remains in the country due to efforts to identify them via the Indigent Interment Program.
Chief Medical Examiner Greg Hess noted in 2024 that the county maintains around 600 sets of skeletal remains, which exceeds other counties partly due to unidentified migrants perishing in the harsh Sonoran Desert conditions. Hess explained that remains decompose swiftly due to exposure to heat and arid conditions, leading to a higher count of skeletal remains.
The remains’ proximity to Guthrie’s home spurred online speculation. High-profile missing persons cases tend to amplify public interest in otherwise common findings. Guthrie is the 84-year-old mother of ‘Today’ co-host Savannah Guthrie. She vanished from her residence near Tucson on February 1, with authorities believing she was taken against her will. Law enforcement states there are no suspects or confirmation of her status.
