LIV Golf Extends Commitment Deadline Amid Financial Restructuring

54 minutes ago 0

LIV Golf has given players more time to decide on their future with the league. The deadline for players to commit has been moved from October 13 to October 25. This extension follows BC Partners’ initial investment in ‘LIV 2.0,’ aiming to raise $300 million to help the league recover from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Earlier, in September, LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy after losing financial support from its sole funder, the Saudi Public Investment Fund. The fund had been supporting the league since 2022 but decided to withdraw all funding by the end of the 2026 season. By that time, the Saudis had invested $5 billion into LIV Golf.

Rory McIlroy recently questioned the value LIV Golf players bring upon returning to the PGA Tour. Meanwhile, BC Partners’ financial commitment to LIV came just two days before bankruptcy hearings began. The investment aims to support a 2027 season with a planned 10-tournament schedule, half of which will occur internationally.

BC Partners’ Ted Goldthorpe highlighted the significance of giving players actual ownership in the league. This move aims to motivate players and align everyone’s interests with the long-term success of LIV Golf.

In August, it was revealed that LIV Golf’s next iteration would grant players the majority of equity. According to LIV CEO Scott O’Neil, the league will be ‘driven by and for the players.’ He outlined that this change is intended to make LIV a more player-focused league.

Prominent players still associated with LIV include Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, and Tyrrell Hatton. Due to LIV’s bankruptcy and restructuring, players may be released from existing contracts, potentially allowing them to explore other ventures.

As of now, the PGA Tour has not offered a straightforward pathway for former LIV Golf players wanting to rejoin.
