The Los Angeles Chargers confirmed on Sunday a significant setback to their offensive lineup. Starting center Tyler Biadasz will miss the entire season due to a season-ending ACL injury. The injury occurred last week during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers.
Biadasz, 28, was a key addition to the Chargers’ roster in the offseason. He had signed a notable three-year, $30 million contract with the team post his release from the Washington Commanders. The team had aimed for him to be an improvement over Bradley Bozeman, who held the center position for the last two seasons in Los Angeles.
Injury Details
The incident occurred when Chargers guard Kayode Awosika threw 49ers defensive lineman Sebastian Valdez to the ground during an 11-on-11 drill. Valdez inadvertently impacted Biadasz’s legs, leading to the center being taken off the field on a cart.
Tyler Biadasz was approaching his seventh NFL season, having begun his career with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys drafted him from Wisconsin in the fourth round. During his time with Dallas, he made a Pro Bowl appearance in his third season. He spent the next two seasons with the Commanders before joining the Chargers.
Upcoming Changes
With Biadasz out, second-round rookie Jake Slaughter will step in at center. Slaughter, who was initially vying for the left guard position, will revert to his previous role as a center. His college career at Florida provided him ample experience in this position as he also showed potential during training camps and preseason.
The Chargers are unfortunately familiar with such setbacks. Last season, left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a patellar tendon injury shortly after securing a substantial four-year, $114 million contract extension. This forced a reshuffle, moving Joe Alt from right tackle to left tackle, but multiple ankle injuries limited Alt to six games, compromising the line’s integrity.
Quarterback Justin Herbert now hopes this injury does not signal more disruptions to his offensive line this season.
