WASHINGTON – Kyle Kirkwood emerged victorious at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday. His performance in the race showcased his skill and determination, as he overtook Álex Palou early on and maintained his lead.

Kirkwood’s significant pace throughout the weekend was evident, with only Palou managing to challenge him at certain points. Despite late race cautions, Kirkwood stayed focused, setting up a competitive environment with Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard.

Kirkwood’s win was celebrated by legendary driver Mario Andretti, reaffirming Kirkwood’s expertise and success.

Lundgaard posed a strong challenge with his choice of red alternate tires, which initially gave him an edge over Kirkwood’s primary tires during the final green flag stint. However, as the race progressed, his tires began to lose grip, allowing Kirkwood to finish first. Lundgaard secured second place, while Kirkwood’s teammate, Will Power, claimed third.

For Kirkwood, this victory was significant for his championship aspirations. It narrowed Palou’s lead in the standings to 91 points. Kirkwood now boasts two wins this season, the other being at the Grand Prix of Arlington.

Palou, on the other hand, faced challenges throughout the day. He incurred a penalty on his first pit stop, encountered tire issues, and crashed on lap 122, causing a late caution.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix, organized as part of America’s 250th anniversary festivities, featured an honorary lap led by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania. They also played ceremonial roles, with the President starting the race and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy concluding it.

Looking ahead, IndyCar enthusiasts can anticipate three remaining races in the season. The Milwaukee Mile hosts a double-header next weekend, followed by the season finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 6. The championship battle remains intense, pitting Kirkwood against rivals in a quest for victory.

All upcoming NTT IndyCar Series races will be broadcast on FOX, offering fans continued coverage of the thrilling season.
