U.S. Wheelchair Rugby Team Wins First Global Title in 16 Years

The U.S. wheelchair rugby team achieved a significant victory by securing its first global title in 16 years. This triumph came after defeating rival Australia in the World Championship final held on Sunday in São Paulo, Brazil.

Leading the U.S. team was Chuck Aoki, a four-time Paralympian. The team won the match 57-51, showcasing their prowess in a rematch of the final from the most recent World Championships in 2022. Earlier in the tournament, Australia had won against the U.S. 54-44 during pool play on Thursday.

The U.S. team also faced a challenging semifinal against Japan, which ended in a narrow 50-49 win for the Americans, reminiscent of the tight competition from the 2024 Paralympic final where Japan emerged victorious.

Looking ahead, the U.S. team enters the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics as the reigning world champions. Their objective will be to attain Paralympic gold, a feat they have not accomplished since 2008. In the past four Paralympics, the U.S. has consistently earned silver or bronze medals.

The only instance of a host nation winning the Paralympic tournament in wheelchair rugby was at the 1996 Atlanta Games. This debut marked when wheelchair rugby was introduced as a demonstration sport. On the other hand, Australia has demonstrated consistent success by clinching two of the last four Paralympic titles and two world titles.
