LSU, under Lane Kiffin’s guidance, aims for a spot in the College Football Playoff during his inaugural season. The Tigers started strong with a 51-10 victory over Clemson and secured wins against Texas A&M, McNeese State, and Louisiana Tech. However, narrow losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky mean they have little room for error.
Following these setbacks, LSU shut out Mississippi State 31-0 and defeated Auburn 38-17 on the road. Currently, they stand at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, ranked No. 15 in the latest AP poll. With LSU gaining momentum, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt has placed them as the No. 11 seed in his projected 12-team playoff, despite predicting a 9-3 finish.
Klatt expects LSU to triumph over Alabama and Tennessee in November but anticipates a loss to Texas. He believes these key victories could secure an at-large playoff spot. Klatt also notes Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky are likely to finish with a 9-3 record, but he gives LSU the edge over its SEC counterparts.

LSU’s remaining schedule includes No. 10 Alabama on Nov. 7, No. 11 Texas, and No. 16 Tennessee before ending the season at Arkansas. This challenging lineup provides an opportunity for LSU to establish itself as an SEC powerhouse. Winning these matches would enhance their playoff chances significantly. Even with a sole loss to a resurgent Texas team, a 9-3 record could still favor LSU, especially with wins over Tennessee and Alabama.
Kentucky adds complexity to the playoff picture. The Wildcats have already defeated LSU this season and lead the SEC at 7-1, with a conference record of 5-1. Their only defeat came against Alabama. Kentucky’s upcoming games include Tennessee, No. 17 Florida, No. 23 Missouri, and Louisville. Although Klatt predicts a late-season decline for Kentucky, even an 11-1 finish would bolster LSU’s standing with the selection committee.

Reaching the CFP would be a significant achievement for Kiffin’s first year. LSU entered the season with championship ambitions, thanks to securing the top transfer class and a leading recruiting class. The university invested heavily, more than $40 million in the roster and $91 million in Kiffin. Success in the postseason would validate these expenditures, especially if LSU can advance deeply in the competition.
