Lucas Haas, a promising pitcher from Valparaiso, has become a notable name among college baseball teams. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 195 pounds, his skills include a fastball reaching 91 mph with an impressive spin rate. “I attended the Future Games before the recruiting window opened,” Haas explained. “Once it opened on August 1, I received numerous calls from schools. The interest slowed in the fall, but a few schools remained in contact through winter, and attention surged after my last high school season.”

Impressive Performance Leads to College Interest

Haas achieved a record of 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 46 innings, playing for Valparaiso’s Class 4A sectional champion Vikings. Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue expressed interest, yet one institution stood out to Haas. “Cincinnati was on my mind early,” he mentioned, noting his initial visit left a significant impression.

Commitment to Cincinnati

On July 8, Haas committed to the University of Cincinnati’s baseball program, led by coach Jordan Bischel. The team has an impressive track record, securing NCAA Tournament spots in consecutive seasons. “I trust the coaches to help me develop,” he said. “I believe I can make an immediate impact and support the program effectively.” Committing early seems beneficial for Haas, an All-Duneland Athletic Conference honoree.

“He aims for excellence,” asserted Valparaiso coach Todd Evans. “Lucas strives to be a top-tier state pitcher. He wants us to excel in sectional, regional, and semistate competitions.” His leadership and ambition inspire those around him. “The sky is the limit for Lucas,” said Evans. Describing Haas as a competitive “bulldog,” Evans emphasized his unmatched determination.

Drive and Determination

Haas attributed his success to a relentless work ethic. “Hard work and determination define me more than my fastball,” he stated. “I aim to outperform those ahead of me. If Cincinnati puts me in, I intend to prove my worth.” His father, Ryan Haas, encourages this perseverance. “He must remain committed,” Ryan said. “Even after his commitment, there’s much to accomplish.” He urges Lucas to keep challenging himself.

As his high school career concludes, Haas is eager to savor moments with his Valparaiso teammates. “I want to cherish my senior season and make a strong state run,” he shared. The excitement of joining Cincinnati looms large. “Meeting the team and coaches is thrilling. I’m eager to connect and focus on winning,” he concluded.
