Unforgettable Blunders in Women’s College Basketball

34 minutes ago 0

Missing which basket to score on should not happen in college basketball. On a single Friday, both New Mexico State and Northwestern State women’s basketball teams made memorable errors by scoring on the wrong basket.

In the game between Northwestern State and Arkansas, the Lady Demons’ guard, Karma Wynn, inadvertently scored for the Razorbacks. After an offensive foul, and while guarding the basket, Wynn mistakenly placed the ball in the Razorbacks’ rim during an inbounds play from the backcourt. The unexpected mishap handed Arkansas two free points, contributing to their decisive 89-59 victory. The Northwestern State bench was visibly shocked; an assistant coach could only bury her head in disappointment.

New Mexico State’s game against Southern Utah presented another surprising moment. With just over 20 seconds remaining, the Aggies were down 61-60. Emma Christiana intercepted an inbounds pass, but instead of scoring on the correct basket, she mistakenly scored on her own. This bizarre turn left spectators and the scoreboard in confusion as it appeared New Mexico State had taken the lead.

Even as Christiana’s error gave Southern Utah a 63-60 advantage, New Mexico State managed a remarkable comeback. Freshman Stacy Chovino scored twice in the final moments, including a decisive basket with two seconds to spare, securing a 64-63 victory for the Aggies.

Winning after scoring for the opposition late in the game is an unusual achievement in basketball. This chaotic day of basketball will likely inspire a renewed focus on fundamentals, with youth coaches possibly emphasizing the basics, such as identifying the correct basket.
