Asian Market Movements
The Kospi was down 1.3% on Thursday at 5,587.82, following a 10.8% drop on Tuesday and nearly 6% on Wednesday. Despite losing over 35% from its June high of more than 9,000, the benchmark remains about 30% higher for the year.
Samsung Electronics saw a 2.4% rise after reporting record operating profits for the latest quarter, aligning with forecasts. Conversely, SK Hynix dropped 4% after disappointing investors, despite a sixfold increase in quarterly profits. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.6% to 61,778.02. SoftBank Group fell 2.7%, while Tokyo Electron and Kioxia Holdings rose 4.4% and 7.5%, respectively.
Taiwan’s Taiex gained 0.8%, with TSMC up 1.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng saw a marginal decline, and the Shanghai Composite was down 1.2%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.9%, while India’s Sensex slightly increased.
Oil Prices and Geopolitical Tensions
Oil prices fell as the U.S. and Iran exchanged attacks. President Trump threatened significant retaliation after Iran targeted a U.S. base. This heightened tension has limited traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transport route.
Brent crude dropped 1% to $87.18 per barrel, down from its February position of around $72 before the conflict escalated. U.S. crude also fell 0.9% to $83.74 per barrel.
U.S. Stock Market and Fed Decisions
The S&P 500 dropped 1.5% to 7,316.15 on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.2%, and the Nasdaq composite decreased by 1.7%. Key tech stocks like Nvidia and AMD witnessed declines of 3.6% and 5.5%, respectively.
The Federal Reserve maintained interest rates but signaled uncertainty in future policies. Chairman Kevin Warsh reiterated the goal to bring inflation down to 2% while providing less guidance on rate changes, sparking volatility concerns.
U.S. 10-year Treasury yields rose to 4.70% from 4.61% the previous day.
Currency Dynamics
The U.S. dollar showed slight strength against the yen, rising to 163.49 yen. The euro weakened slightly, trading at $1.1454.
