Maya Rudolph’s Broadway Debut in ‘Oh, Mary!’

2 weeks ago 0

Maya Rudolph has made her Broadway debut in the play Oh, Mary!, portraying an eccentric version of Mary Todd Lincoln. Known for her humor that borders on genius due to its stupidity, Rudolph finds the play particularly fitting. She describes it as so dumb, indicative of the type of humor she loves.

Oh, Mary! presents a fictionalized version of Mrs. Lincoln as a self-centered, heavy-drinking, aspiring cabaret singer, feeling trapped by her husband Abraham’s uptight nature. Rudolph, who has extensive experience in improv and sketch comedy from Saturday Night Live, excels in portraying such a character. Her performance includes physical slapstick humor and expressive facial actions that often evoke bigger laughs than the scripted lines.

Sam Pinkleton, the play’s director, praised Rudolph’s skills, saying, She is, at her core, a stage beast. Living in the moment, interacting with the audience, and responding naturally comes inherently to her.

Rudolph is the eighth actor to take on the role, succeeding a line of dynamic performers including Cole Escola (the creator), Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Hannah Solow, Jane Krakowski, and John Cameron Mitchell. She joined the production in late April, mastering her role within a mere 10 days of rehearsal, and the audience can enjoy her performance until July 5.

For her Broadway debut, Rudolph trained rigorously, practiced lines with her daughter, and relied on her skills in improvisation to adapt quickly and effectively.
