Meghan Markle’s Royal Challenges: A Culture Clash Explored

Meghan Markle’s time as a working royal faced difficulties attributed to a “culture clash” with palace aides. Simon Vigar, a seasoned royal correspondent, delves into these tensions in his book, The Four Wives of Windsor.

At the beginning of their royal tenure, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were well-regarded. Vigar recalled her initial engagements, where she naturally engaged with crowds. Their royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga in 2018 was notably successful.

However, issues soon arose when palace press officers had to manage differing narratives. Tensions became apparent when a Kensington Palace team member was reportedly distressed over the unfolding situation.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, transitioned from Hollywood, where she starred in Suits, to the British royal family upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Her pregnancy announcement coincided with their Sydney visit during the royal tour. Vigar noted that the tour revealed initial cracks in her royal role, contrasting Hollywood’s controlled environment with the monarchy’s demands.

Vigar quoted an anonymous staffer, highlighting Meghan’s realization of the role’s unglamorous and demanding nature. He pointed out a schedule change during a Fiji market visit, attributed by Team Sussex to security concerns, which others disputed.

Meghan’s pregnancy announcement came in October 2018, with reports attributing the market visit’s early end to security worries due to large crowds. However, Vigar questioned the validity of this reasoning, given the presence of security personnel supposedly ensuring safety.

The strained situation underscored a mismatch between expectations. Vigar asserted that Meghan didn’t fully grasp the cultural aspects of being a royal, unlike those with more familiarity.

A Buckingham Palace aide explained that working royals must fulfill duties regardless of personal well-being. Vigar detailed the challenges involved, marking a stark contrast with Hollywood’s expectations.

Reports suggested staff departures under Harry and Meghan, with some attributing such exits to Meghan’s treatment of employees. Meghan staunchly denied such allegations.
