France and Spain Face Off in World Cup Semifinal Clash

In Arlington, Texas, France and Spain are set to face each other in the World Cup semifinals. Both teams, making their 17th appearance, have never trailed in this year’s tournament. Only one will advance to the final.

Matchup of Powerhouses

This clash marks their second meeting on soccer’s biggest stage. The game will take place at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium, one of two blockbuster semifinal matches.

France, ranked number one by FIFA, dominates the opposition with a 14-2 goal record. Kylian Mbappé, 2022’s Golden Boot winner, equals Lionel Messi with eight tournament goals. He is one goal shy of Messi’s career record of 21 World Cup goals.

“We are confident, of course, with the course we have done so far, and we have to be,” said France’s Adrien Rabiot. “But always with this humility that has characterized us since the beginning of the competition.”

With 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, Mbappé remains vital. His goal contributed to France’s victory over Morocco in the quarterfinals.

Spain’s Strategy

Teenage star Lamine Yamal, who recently turned 19, leads Spain. Yamal previously aided in two semifinal victories over France, including a 2024 European Championship win. He aims for a final berth as an ideal birthday present.

Spain has a 10-1 record following a scoreless draw against Cape Verde. Mikel Merino’s clutch goals turned the tide in recent matches, and Unai Simón set a record with 650 scoreless minutes until Belgium’s quarterfinal score.

Alex Baena noted the team’s improvement with more play and practice. Merino scored decisive goals not just against Belgium, but also in their earlier win over Portugal.

Historic Tournament

The 1990 World Cup was the last with all semifinal teams as former champions. Messi’s Argentina will face England in another semifinal in Atlanta.

The final is scheduled for Sunday at MetLife Stadium, near New York City. The third-place match will occur Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

France and Spain’s World Cup Legacies

France managed a victory over Spain in their only prior World Cup matchup in 2006. Since then, both have claimed titles: Spain in 2010 and France in 2018.

France, playing on its Bastille Day, aims to join Brazil and Germany in consecutive finals. It will be their seventh semifinal, whereas Spain marks their third.
