Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, recently achieved a significant victory by unseating Representative Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary in the Denver area. This victory, reported by The Associated Press, showcases the growing influence of the progressive wing within the Democratic Party.
Ms. Kiros’s triumph ends the 15-term tenure of Ms. DeGette, emphasizing the strength of the insurgent coalition that recently secured several congressional wins in New York. As an immigrant and first-time candidate, Ms. Kiros’s success in this deep-blue Colorado district nearly assures her election in November.
With a background as a lawyer and doctoral student in public affairs, Ms. Kiros positioned herself as a political outsider. She aimed to address the affordability crisis, which she argues has been neglected by the Democratic establishment. Her campaign also strongly opposed U.S. support for Israel, which was a central element of her political platform.
Despite Ms. DeGette’s financial edge, bolstered by substantial outside group funding, Ms. Kiros’s grassroots campaign prevailed. As of early Wednesday, with nearly 80 percent of votes counted, Ms. Kiros led by more than five percentage points.
In her campaign biography, Ms. Kiros highlighted a key personal experience. In 2023, she was dismissed from a Manhattan law firm for refusing to remove a letter that questioned Israel’s historical legitimacy, supported pro-Palestinian campus protesters, and criticized the firm’s response to activist law students.
