Fatal Car Crash Involving Undocumented Immigrant in Grand Rapids

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a fatal car crash occurred over the weekend following actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempting to stop the driver, according to Grand Rapids police. The crash took place around 7 a.m. Sunday, as ICE agents were the first responders at the scene, neighbors reported to Nexstar’s WOOD.

The driver who died in the crash was Mario David Coronado Juarez, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, who had been residing and working in Grand Rapids for approximately seven years. His death was confirmed by relatives.

The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) stated in a Tuesday release that ICE agents tried to halt the vehicle, leading the driver to flee before crashing into a tree and subsequently catching fire on Century Avenue SW near McKendrick Street SW. Coronado Juarez was reported as the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor shared details with WOOD, observing what seemed like an undercover operation at first due to the vehicles’ positions and the involvement of unmarked law enforcement vehicles and individuals wearing bulletproof vests. The witness captured a video that showed unmarked sedans and various agents.

Neighbors expressed concerns about ICE’s actions, with one pointing out that Coronado Juarez was involved in construction work, finishing houses, and sending money to his family back in Guatemala, portraying him as a hardworking individual unfairly treated like a criminal.

Family members revealed that Coronado Juarez migrated to the U.S. to support his family, including his children, financially by sending money back home. A family friend described him as a “good person,” emphasizing his commitment to work and family.

Due to the intricate nature of the investigation, the GRPD requested assistance from the Michigan State Police to gather information from federal agents concerning events prior to the crash. The complexity and potential relevance of circumstances surrounding the crash have prompted collaboration with the Michigan State Police under the guidance of state authorities.

GRPD clarified their non-involvement before being alerted to the crash site. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has yet to provide a comment regarding the incident, as stated in reports.
