Mexico Enhances Security for World Cup Celebrations Amid Safety Concerns

Mexico City officials announced measures to bolster security and manage crowds at the Angel of Independence monument and the main square during the Mexico-England World Cup match. This follows the tragic deaths of four fans after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador.

Mayor Clara Brugada unveiled a comprehensive security plan, aiming to address safety after fans suffered from asphyxiation and cardiac arrest. Due to high ticket prices, many fans have been celebrating victories in the streets instead of stadiums. Authorities have promised that safety measures are in place after earlier security concerns rose from cartel violence in Guadalajara.

Brugada confirmed there would be free access to popular areas like the Angel monument and Zócalo, with controlled capacity to enhance safety. Only 25,000 individuals will be allowed access to the Angel monument; once full, fans can view the match from other designated areas along Paseo de la Reforma. Similarly, the Zócalo’s access will be limited, directing excess visitors to over 50 viewing locations across the city.

The security reinforcement plan involves deploying 6,000 officers to Paseo de la Reforma, twice the number used previously. Estadio Azteca will see 7,500 officers, while another 3,300 will serve in the Zócalo. Secretary of Public Security Pablo Vázquez described creating a security perimeter at the Angel of Independence to regulate crowd movement. Restrictions will be placed on street vendors and delivery services. Some metro lines may face strategic closures.

Secretary of Government César Cravioto added that alcohol sales in the city center streets would be prohibited from July 5, with consumption limited to controlled venues such as restaurants and hotels. Secretary of Civil Protection Myriam Urzúa advised fans to avoid risky crowd activities like “Want to Fly!” and “Shall We Swim!” to prevent injury.

The England team arrived under strict security measures on Friday night in the Santa Fe area. Local police, Army, and National Guard personnel ensured their safe passage. Unlike previous matches, no significant fan disruptions were reported.
