Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has quickly named Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback, overshadowing J.J. McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick. This decision draws from more than just training camp performances. Reports suggest concerns within the Vikings organization about McCarthy’s consistency and injury setbacks from previous seasons.

McCarthy, who missed his rookie year due to a knee injury, showed inconsistency in the 2025 season. Completing 57.6% of his passes, McCarthy threw 11 touchdowns but also 12 interceptions over 10 games. His performance led the Vikings to a 6-4 record in that span, prompting exploration for a new quarterback this offseason.

For McCarthy, now a backup in Year 3, questions arise regarding his future. A defensive coach believes McCarthy possesses talent but stresses the importance of learning game management without exceeding his role’s expectations. While McCarthy’s future with the Vikings is uncertain, his age and potential for growth at 23 offer a development opportunity.

The new Viking’s general manager, Nolan Teasley, is not tied to McCarthy’s selection, unlike his predecessor Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Although McCarthy’s sample size is limited to 10 games, there are moments indicating promise, despite a low quarterback rating among peers with 155 or more attempts.

In a preseason matchup against the Giants, McCarthy completed 4-of-7 passes for 34 yards, suffering a sack. Competing for the backup position with Carson Wentz, Wentz showcased a better performance with a 6-of-11 completion rate and one touchdown pass. Murray’s initial series demonstrated efficiency, connecting on two out of three attempts and continuing drives.
