Military experts, including F-16 pilot Lt Col Dan Rooney, highlighted a complex operation to rescue a US Airman from Iran. The airman evaded capture for 48 hours after ejecting from an aircraft. President Trump praised this mission as the ‘most complex search and rescue operation in U.S. history,’ emphasizing the precision and bravery of the units involved.
The Battle of Mogadishu: A Historical Perspective
Former Army Ranger James Lechner shared his experiences from the Battle of Mogadishu, referred to as Black Hawk Down, which occurred on October 3-4, 1993, in Somalia. A mission to capture Somali militants turned disastrous when helicopters were shot down by fighters, leading to intense ground combat.
A small contingent of Army Rangers, Delta Force operators, 24th STS members, and SEAL Team 6 commandos was dispatched to Somalia to stop a genocide. Lechner, then part of the 75th Rangers, was gravely injured when an AK-47 round shattered his tibia.
“Took an AK-47 round right below the knee. Blew out my tibia, and as you know, when bone gets hit, it becomes shrapnel. So that shredded my leg.” – James Lechner
Delta Force medics bravely retrieved Lechner amid ongoing gunfire. The medic dragged him to a fortified building that served as a casualty collection point. Intense arterial bleeding resulted in a blood pool two inches deep on the floor.
Remembering the Fierce Combat
The battle’s horrific toll included 18 American soldiers killed and many others wounded. Despite the challenges, Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart exhibited tremendous valor at Mike Durant’s crash site, earning them the Medal of Honor.
This battle demonstrated American soldiers’ exceptionalism and resilience even in dire conditions, unmatched by any military elsewhere.
