3 weeks ago 0

Morgan Park senior Travezz Jones thrives on the field with an ability to get open when it counts. At 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, the wide receiver’s exceptional timing and awareness are key to his success. “The ball was there, and I knew I had to help my team,” he shared. Jones’ touchdown catch and 2-point conversion energized the Mustangs’ 24-14 victory over Kenwood during the city championship game at Lane Stadium in Chicago.

Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. played a crucial role, completing 14 of 21 passes for 181 yards and scoring three touchdowns for Morgan Park, which improved to 8-1 and secured the Public League Red Star title. Junior receiver Jaxon Bland also contributed with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. On the opposing side, Kenwood’s quarterback Malachi Henigan threw a remarkable 78-yard touchdown pass to senior Lawrence Carr and scored a four-yard touchdown run. The Broncos ended their season at 6-3 with the Public League Red Shield title.

During the match, Jones recorded a team-high five catches for 76 yards. Morgan Park coach Chris James has watched Jones mature over four years. “When we needed him, he made crucial plays,” James noted. Jones’ 27-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter erased Kenwood’s halftime lead of 14-8. Smith, confident in their connection, said, “We knew what was coming, and I always know he’s ready for big moments.” Jones used his speed and skill to destabilize Kenwood’s defense.

Jones’ crucial 23-yard reception on a third-and-19 set up Bland’s game-sealing touchdown in the final quarter. “The game is about confidence, and scoring boosted mine,” Jones said. He excels in moving across the field, creating defensive mismatches. Primarily a slot receiver, Jones uses his quickness and route-running skills to his advantage. His precise catching is notable. “More and more, I feel like the offense revolves around me,” Jones explained. With a scholarship offer from Western Illinois, he aims to continue the Mustangs’ tradition of developing college-level receivers.

Jones’ connection with teammates Smith and Bland is evident in their seamless on-field synergy. “My competitive nature was there from the start,” Jones said. Inspired by older cousins, he discovered his talent early on, recognizing his athletic potential as a child. “When I touch the ball, I focus on performing at my best,” he added.

Jones’ standout performance brought him and his team well-deserved recognition. His evolution as a player is a testament to his dedication and skill in becoming a key figure in Morgan Park’s success.
