The Mt. Olive Pickle Company has opted out of participating in the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C. due to a Confederate flag being featured in an exhibit. Initially invited to contribute to the North Carolina exhibit, the company from Mount Olive, North Carolina expressed pride in its origins and agreed to partake in an exhibit showcasing the state’s best attributes.
North Carolina was among several states that opted not to attend the fair citing budgetary limitations. Nonetheless, state representation persisted at the 16-day event thanks to local companies stepping forward, reported Gabrielle Caracciolo, a correspondent from Nexstar Washington.
The controversy arose when a video including the Confederate flag was shown at the North Carolina exhibit. Mt. Olive Pickle Co. stated it was unaware of such imagery and has since retracted its participation from the display. The company emphasized its dedication to values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom in its statement.
The North Carolina booth continues to highlight other local enterprises. Operation Helo is present to discuss their capability in delivering rapid response disaster relief. Additionally, attendees can take photos with a NASCAR stock car provided by Richard Childress Racing.
The Great American State Fair is scheduled to continue until July 10.
