Musician Zach Bryan took to the stage at Gillette Stadium, making a statement with his attire. During his performance, he wore a shirt emblazoned with the words “Free Palestine” and “An appeal to heaven,” accompanied by a pine tree logo. This appearance was part of the first of two concerts scheduled at the venue, with the second show slated for Saturday night. Some members of Bryan’s band also joined him in wearing shirts with similar messages.
The phrase “An appeal to heaven” carries historical significance, originating from the Revolutionary War. It featured on Massachusetts’ official maritime flag until 1971, symbolizing the hope that divine intervention would assist the colonists in their fight against oppression.
CBS Boston sought comments from Gillette Stadium but had not yet received a response.
This event followed an earlier controversy involving rapper Macklemore, who expressed pro-Palestinian sentiments during a concert at MetLife Stadium. Subsequently, he was removed from Ed Sheeran’s “Loop” tour, which had been scheduled to perform at Gillette Stadium. Ed Sheeran, following a conversation with Robert Kraft, the owner of Gillette Stadium, and the New England Patriots, decided Macklemore would not participate.
Kraft’s decision stemmed from a broader context of perceived antisemitic rhetoric and imagery associated with Macklemore. Kraft stated that these actions were considered deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.
In response to the controversy, Macklemore acknowledged the reality of antisemitism on Instagram but argued that criticizing Israel shouldn’t be equated with antisemitic sentiments. In a show of support for Palestinians, he pledged $1 million and encouraged Kraft to match his donation. Kraft responded by indicating he had discussed a similar donation with Sheeran, following Sheeran’s personal $2 million pledge.
Sheeran’s concerts at Gillette Stadium planned for September 25 and 26 were ultimately canceled due to a nor’easter affecting the area.
