The governor of Tennessee announced a proposal to rename the airport in Nashville in honor of Dolly Parton. Parton, a beloved country music star and native of Tennessee, passed away recently at the age of 80 due to cancer.
Governor Bill Lee issued a statement saying it would be a fitting tribute for Nashville International Airport to carry the name of Dolly Parton, who he referred to as “our state’s favorite daughter.” Discussions have already begun with Parton’s representatives regarding this idea.
The renaming proposal may require the Metro Nashville Airport Authority to reconsider its current naming policy. This policy stipulates that airport properties can be named for individuals only after they have been deceased for at least two years.
The governor’s office indicated that both the proposal and the naming policy will be reviewed at the airport authority’s meeting on September 17.
