NATO Intercepts Drone Over Romania Amid Escalating Tensions

An F-18 fighter jet conducting a NATO air policing mission intercepted and shot down a drone breaching Romanian airspace. This marks the fourth such incident within Romania’s skies this year, according to a statement from Romania’s defense ministry on Sunday.

U.S. Army Colonel Martin O’Donnell, representing NATO’s military headquarters, emphasized the alliance’s readiness to defend against threats. He noted that the drone appears to be of Russian origin, although investigations continue.

Romania shares a 381-mile border with Ukraine and has experienced recurring airspace violations by Russian drones over the past four years. Mines have also been spotted in the Black Sea along significant trade and energy routes.

While the drone’s exact source is undetermined, it was detected by radar entering from Moldova, north of the Romanian city of Galati. The F-18 jet, part of a Spanish NATO force stationed in Romania, made successful radar contact and was granted permission to engage, safely downing the drone at 5:01 a.m.

The defense ministry confirmed that the drone debris landed in an uninhabited area between two villages.

“Additional details regarding Sunday’s incident ​remain under investigation,” said Colonel Martin O’Donnell.

Moscow Struck by Ukrainian Overnight Assaults

Meanwhile, in Russia, Ukrainian drones launched attacks in the Moscow region overnight on Sunday. The strikes, regarded as some of the most extensive in the area, reportedly left one dead according to Andrei Vorobyov, Moscow region governor.

Vorobyov reported on Telegram that an 83-year-old man died, with several injuries sustained in Podolsk, where a warehouse belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, was hit. Additional damages occurred at multiple locations, including a warehouse in Domodedovo near a major Moscow airport.

A video captured by Reuters showed smoke emanating from Wildberries’ Koledino warehouse, roughly 45 kilometers south of Moscow. Ukraine targets Wildberries, accusing it of military involvement.

Russian Assaults on Kyiv Continue

Simultaneously, Russian forces bombarded Kyiv with missiles and drones on Sunday, causing fires in several districts. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed three injuries resulted from the attacks.

Explosions caused a fire in a northern suburb, with more flames erupting near the city center. Eyewitnesses reported multiple explosions across the capital.

Tymur Tkachenko, the Kyiv regional governor, stated that three additional injuries, including a child’s, occurred due to the assault.

In recent weeks, Russia has escalated air attacks on Kyiv, intensifying conflict in Ukrainian territories.
