New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Scrutiny Over Association with Controversial Outlet

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under scrutiny due to his association with Uncivilized Media, a Qatar-based outlet accused of propagating antisemitic conspiracy theories. Although Mamdani sat with this media outlet in 2023, recent events have placed this association under a spotlight once again.

This controversy came to light when Uncivilized Media shared collaborative posts on Instagram featuring clips from Mamdani’s interview, despite him unfollowing the account. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and other online antisemitism experts, Uncivilized Media is known for content accusing Jews and Israelis of seeking global dominance and other conspiracy theories.

Oren Segal, ADL’s senior vice president of counter-extremism and intelligence, noted the outlet’s tendency to promote ‘classic tropes about Jews’ in its content, raising questions about Mamdani’s association.

Segal clarified that while Mamdani’s interviews did not specifically focus on these conspiracy theories, questions have been raised among Jewish New Yorkers regarding the mayor’s stance. Segal emphasized the importance of addressing public concerns to ensure clarity on Mamdani’s beliefs.

In his 2023 interview with Uncivilized Media, Mamdani highlighted his views on the Palestinian issue, stating it as central to his identity. He expressed empathy and solidarity drawn from his upbringing, aligning his perspective around social justice.

Following Mamdani’s victory in the 2025 NYC Democratic mayoral primary, his interview resurfaced, alongside his remarks on democratic socialism and solidarity between progressive and Muslim values. Mamdani addressed misconceptions about Muslim values, advocating a broader understanding of diverse histories and communities.

The recent scrutiny intensified after Mamdani’s comments labeling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as ‘a war criminal’ and accusing him of genocide against Palestinians. This has further fueled concerns within the Jewish community about their relationship with City Hall.

Segal suggested that Mamdani could alleviate concerns by publicly disavowing Uncivilized Media’s antisemitic content. He also stressed the importance of clarity on Mamdani’s stance regarding Israelis, given the content promoted by the outlet.
